If you did not start ISA during installation, start it now:
$INFORMIXDIR/ISA /sbin/isactl start

The startup script should set the INFORMIXDIR, PATH, ONCONFIG, and INFORMIXSERVER environment variables and then execute oninit. Similarly, you can ask the system administrator to modify the shutdown script so that the database server shuts down normally.
