Informix Error -29048: ISAM Error: error message.
Cause and resolution
ISAM Error: error message.
An ISAM error occurred while reading data from a Gateway ISAM setup file that the Gateway xxxdba utility manages. The name of the ISAM setup file in question and the ISAM error number are returned in SQLERRM.
If the Gateway was spawned by way of IPC-pipe mode, you must ensure that the INFORMIXDIR environment variable was set correctly before the application starts. Otherwise, notify the DBA:
* The DBA for IBM Informix Enterprise Gateway must ensure that the $INFORMIXDIR/egw/sysinfo directory exists with the proper permissions and that the ISAM setup files are present in that directory. If an IBM Informix Enterprise Gateway setup file is missing or corrupted, run egwdba to create it, or run the bcheckegw utility to repair it.
If IBM Informix Enterprise Gateway was spawned by way of network mode (that is, by the daemon egwd), the DBA also must ensure that the INFORMIXDIR environment variable was set correctly in the root login when the egwd daemon was started.
* The DBA for IBM Informix Gateway with DRDA must ensure that the $INFORMIXDIR/gw/sysinfo directory exists with the proper permissions and the ISAM setup files are present in that directory. If a Gateway setup file is missing or corrupted, run gwdba to create it, or run the bcheckgw utility to repair it.
If the Gateway was spawned by way of network mode (that is, by the daemon gwd), the IBM Informix Gateway with DRDA DBA also must ensure that the INFORMIXDIR environment variable was set correctly in the root login when the gwd daemon was started.
* The DBA for IBM Informix Enterprise Gateway Manager must ensure that the $INFORMIXDIR/egm/sysinfo directory exists with the proper permissions and the ISAM setup files are present in that directory. If a Gateway setup file is missing or corrupted, run egmdba to create it, or run the bcheckegm utility to repair it.
If the Gateway was spawned by way of network mode (that is, by the daemon egmd), the IBM Informix Enterprise Gateway Manager DBA also must ensure that the INFORMIXDIR environment variable was set correctly in the root login when the egmd daemon was started.
Oninit® Troubleshooting Guidance
Reasons / Common Causes
-29048 fires when an ISAM error occurs reading a Gateway ISAM setup file the relevant
xxxdba utility manages — per the official guidance, the setup file's name and the ISAM
error number are returned in SQLERRM.
- A missing or corrupted Gateway ISAM setup file, per the official guidance — the direct, only cause.
INFORMIXDIRnot set correctly at Gateway startup, per the official guidance — for IPC-pipe mode, before the application starts; for network mode, at the daemon's (gwd/egwd/egmd) own startup as root.
Solutions / Resolution
- Confirm
INFORMIXDIRwas set correctly before the Gateway/daemon started, per the official guidance. - Confirm the product's
sysinfodirectory ($INFORMIXDIR/gw/sysinfo,$INFORMIXDIR/egw/sysinfo, or$INFORMIXDIR/egm/sysinfodepending on the Gateway product) exists with correct permissions and the setup files are present, per the official guidance. - Run the matching
*dbautility (gwdba/egwdba/egmdba) to recreate a missing file, orbcheck*(bcheckgw/bcheckegw/bcheckegm) to repair a corrupted one, per the official guidance.

No specific triggering statement is documented beyond an ISAM error on a Gateway setup file.
Diagnostic Checks
- Extract the setup filename and ISAM error number from
SQLERRM, and checkINFORMIXDIR, thesysinfodirectory, and its file permissions for the relevant Gateway product.
