Informix Error -5008: CSM: peer disconnected.
Cause and resolution
CSM: peer disconnected.
A CSM (Communications Support Module), in the database server or in the
client, received a message from the peer CSM (using their private CSM-to-CSM protocol) to initiate an orderly tear-down of their respective CSM contexts. This CSM responded by returning to the caller (CSS and its caller) with this message. This message might not be an error, but might actually be part of the protocol. A typical event that might trigger this disconnection is the expiration of a credential (such as an old Kerberos ticket, an association that is too long if the CSM functionality includes placing limits on the duration of SQL sessions, or an expired X.509 certificate). This error can occur only during use of a CSM.
If the disconnection seems unexpected and the problem persists, contact IBM Informix Technical Support or the CSM vendor and have the following information available: CSS configuration files and sqlhosts information for both the client and the database server.
Oninit® Troubleshooting Guidance
Reasons / Common Causes
-5008 fires when a CSM (Communications Support Module) receives a message from the peer CSM, via their private CSM-to-CSM protocol, initiating an orderly tear-down of their respective CSM contexts — per the official guidance, this might not be an error at all, but part of the protocol.
- The peer CSM initiated an orderly disconnect, per the official guidance — often not an error condition.
- A credential expired (e.g. an old Kerberos ticket, a session-duration limit, an expired X.509 certificate) — per the official guidance, a typical trigger for this disconnection.
Solutions / Resolution
- If the disconnection seems unexpected and the problem persists, contact IBM Informix
Technical Support or the CSM vendor, per the official guidance, with the CSS
configuration files and
sqlhostsinformation for both sides available.
Examples
N/A
No specific triggering statement is documented beyond a credential expiration or protocol- level teardown.
Diagnostic Checks
- Check for an expired credential (Kerberos ticket, session-duration limit, X.509 certificate) as a likely, non-error cause before treating this as a genuine failure.

- -5009 — "CSM: authentication error." A related CSM error, about authentication failing outright rather than an orderly disconnect after a credential expires.
The peer CSM initiated an orderly disconnect, often due to an expired credential — not necessarily an error; investigate further only if unexpected and persistent.
