NewEra partitioning

I just received a NewEra information leaflet from Informix. In it they say NewEra supports "application partitioning". It says that applications can easily be partitioned to either the client or server. Has anyone used these facilities ? How much control is allowed? Is it a reference to SPLs/triggers?
