Translating with DrWatson… this can take a few seconds the first time.
This is a genuine, complex translation. DrWatson protects commands, error codes, and log output while naturally translating the surrounding text. It’s translated once and saved.

I was hoping that someone out there has encountered this problem:
We have an online transaction-processing application that stays resident
and processes financial transactions using Informix. The problem is that
Informix Online keeps allocating more and more shared memory for the
process(es).
We've actually seen the problem (on a smaller scale, of course) with the
following ESQL/C code:
main()
{
exec sql BEGIN DECLARE SECTION;
decimal(10,0) institution;
exec sql END DECLARE SECTION;
int count;
/* Get stuff ready */
printf("opening database...\\n");
exec sql database u_switch;
/* Loop it */
for(count=0;count<10000;count++)
{
exec sql select institution into :institution from device
where device_id=13;
printf("%d\\n",count);
}
exec sql close database;
}
The field names are not really important. When this program runs, we see
the "file table" memory pool expand apparently without bounds. (We did an
onstat -g ses xxx to obtain that information while the program is running).
One more note: When the program terminates, all shared memory allocated by
Informix is freed. An obvious solution would be for our OLTP to terminate
and restart once in awhile to avoid this problem--but that's kind of
unsightly behavior for a "continously" available application.
We're running version 7.13.UC1 of Online Dynamic Server on an NCR 3430 dual
Pentium running UNIX MP-RAS 2.03.00. We have ESQL/C ver. 7.13.UC1.
We've been going back and forth with Informix tech support for awhile with
no luck so far.
We're now behind schedule thanks to this little problem. Any help would be
greatly appreciated.
