Synonyms to an SE database

Client wants to move a small database onto a Unix box running SE 7.2 and query it through synonyms on the old box. Am I correct in assuming that this still can't be done with an SE server? Thanks Andy Kent

Hi Andy
RTFM mate. No, seriously ... you can do this in 7.2. See the chapter
entitled 'Understanding Informix Networking' in the SQL Tutorial and
check the piece on Synonym Chains. I think this is exectly what you
need. Usual syntax, synonyms stored in syssyntable.
DATABASE stores7@avignon EXCLUSIVE;
RENAME TABLE customer TO old_cust;
CREATE SYNONYM customer FOR stores7@db_crunch:customer;CLOSE DATABASE;
Hope you are well.
Rgds.
Gerry
Have you actually tried this?
I tried the following - then I remembered the old marekting spiel that
OnLine-as-was supports distributed database and SE doesn't.
Anyway, running from a client with IDS 7.3,
connect to 'newdb@se_linux';
- works;
select * from 'newdb@se_linux':t1
select * from newdb:t1
and
create synonym myt1 for newdb:t1- all get "syntax disallowed in this database server."
While attempting the same statements, with DBPATH set to
//se_linux/<path>, gets either "Database not found or no system
permission", unless I miss the quotes off the synonym one in which
case I get "The database engine program cannot be accessed. I/O
error".
If you can tell me it ought to work and shed any light on why it
won't, I'd be grateful. But I suspect this is intended behaviour.
Andy
