i really don't know that there is. considering that dbimport builds
your indexes after the table is loaded, takes care of setting all permissions,
builds any views, stored procedures, etc... attached to the database, i think
it is definately the easiest way, and i don't know if anything else would be
faster in the end.
if you dropped your 7.1 software onto the existing system, you would
still have to wait while your indexes were rebuilt. but i forgot, you are
a 24x7 shop.
the way i did it was move 3 or 4 cruical databases to one department
over to the new system, and then switched everyone in that department over. the
first day, everything important could be done. then i slowly moved the rest
over. at that point, about half the company was running on the old server,
and half on the new. then i moved all the other important databases over
early one morning, and the rest of the company switched. now i copy databases
over as people have a need for them, and i will archive the rest to tape in
a few weeks time.
