Re: Semi-Annual NoRAID5 rant
Posted in 2004
Hi Art, I just wanted to say that I totally agree with the RAID5 rant. Previously our informix database consisted of RAID1 logs/exes/os (separate arrays) with data on RAID5. Checkpoint times for informix 7.31.TD1X2 running on Windows NT Enterprise was up to 17-18 seconds during peak load. Also was starting to get a bit concerned that the RAID5 array was up to 14 disks increasing the chance of a 2 disk failure. Had the opportunity to get mamagement to fork out some $$ for a database upgrade with bigger disks and an extra RAID controller. Ended up putting the data on 2 RAID10 arrays instead. Checkpoint times have at least halved during peak load. Average database read times have decreased as well. Also feel better that 2 disk failure is greatly reduced with new configuration. Success story here...
