You might have a lot of free space on the rootdbs, but not all of it is allocated to tempdbs. Informix uses tempdbs for sorting, and I guess you have tempdbs still in rootdbs and it's probably way too small for the query. When you bounce the server, you'll get back all the temporary resources taken up by the engine. The only thing that's static is the data on the dbspaces. So, your query didn't leave any data hanging in the tempdbs :-) SOLUTION: Either grab another disk and put a second tempdbs on it or see if you can afford the luxury of reconfiguring your disk space on the partition currently hosting rootdbs. As a thum rule, keep rootdbs as small as possible based on your system config. Good luck.
