Primary Slowness when RSS is active
Posted in 2010
On IDS 11.50FC7W1 (AIX 6.1), heavy load jobs filled a logical log every 10 seconds with the RSS secondary down, but only every 3 minutes with RSS connected — the primary was being throttled by RSS log-shipping flow control (cf. APAR IC67072). Madison Pruet pointed to the new RSS_FLOW_CONTROL onconfig parameter (check with strings; set on the primary); another poster suggested LOG_STAGING_DIR on the RSS. After patching, the poster tried several RSS_FLOW_CONTROL values and still saw throttling, though a same-server primary/RSS pair performed fine, suggesting the ~100ms network latency was involved. The thread ends with Pruet asking for machine access; no resolution is recorded.

Has anyone saw the following issue. Informix 11.50FC7W1 AIX 6.1 I was doing some performance tests with a Primary instance and an RSS instance. Ran 7 load jobs to create logical log activity. do a "strings" and grep for RSS_FLOW_CONTROL. If you have that, then you have the version containing the patch. You'll need to set the value in your onconfig. There's a bit of documentation about it's use in the onconfig.std file. Hi Madison,
I applied a patch with the RSS_FLOW_CONTROL.
I tested it with the following settings, dynamically changing it during the
test:
RSS_FLOW_CONTROL 10000K,9000K
RSS_FLOW_CONTROL 0
RSS_FLOW_CONTROL -1
I am still seeing the issue of the primary being throttled by the RSS.
Even after my test finished to clear the backlog on the primary to be
applied on the RSS instance, it was taking 3 minutes 15 seconds for the RSS
to apply each logical log which were 50 mg each.
I did another test where I setup a primary and RSS instance on the same
server.
I ran the exact same test and there was no issue, the RSS kept up and
primary performance was fast, filling a 50 mg logical log in 10 seconds.
Are there any network settings that you know of that could cause the issue?
The network that we are using has a 100 ms latency.
Any other suggestions?
Thanks, Jeff

I'll really need to get access to the server to figure out anything
further. Are you going to be at IOD? Would it be possible to get access
to the machine while there?

Hi Madison,
Next release being Panther or 11.50FC8?
Is there any way to get around the issue with the current version?
Thanks, Jeff

We've put in code in for the next release to allow the customer to define
the limits set for flow control. I suspect that will address your issue.

Has anyone saw the following issue.
Informix 11.50FC7W1
AIX 6.1
I was doing some performance tests with a Primary instance and an RSS
instance.
Ran 7 load jobs to create logical log activity.
When RSS was connected, logical logs were filling every 3 minutes on
primary.
When RSS was shutdown, logical logs were filling ever 10 seconds on
primary.
No matter how many load processes I ran with RSS enabled, I was filling a
logical log every 3 minutes.
I saw this APAR IC67072 and IBM Informix support said it was fixed in FC7,
even though it looks to be the same issue I am having.
