dbaccess5 crashes against IDS 7.30 with GLS/NCHAR
Posted in 1998
Hi Informixers,
when I use dbaccess 5.10UC1 to connect to an IDS 7.30UC1 server over
a TCP/IP network, it dumps core when I do a simple select against
a table which contains NCHAR columns.
The database was created with DB_LOCALE=de_de.8859-1. Since Informix
5.10UC1 doesn't support GLS, setting CLIENT_LOCALE or DB_LOCALE
doesn't make any difference, neither does it make any difference
whether I use the relay module (sqlrmsoctcp) or sqlexec on the
client side.
This must have something to do with the way NCHAR is passed to a
client. I have read about setting the DBNLS and COLLCHAR environ-
ment variables on the client, but Informix 5.10 doesn't know about
either one.
I am presently in the middle of migration from 4.x frontends and
5.10 backend to 7.20 frontends and 7.30 server. I had hoped that
I could first migrate the server and then the client applications
one by one, but this is now a serious problem. When I switch to
7.30 on the server, I'd like to take advantage of GLS to get the
correct collating sequence for German umlaut characters, but using
NCHAR and NVARCHAR instead of the previously used CHAR and VARCHAR
data types is mandatory for this functionality.
Seems like I'm caught between a rock and a hard place, or is there
a solution for this?
Regards, Richard
