# I am using "dbexport" and "dbimport" utilities of Informix 4.00.
# When I creat a new database through "dbimport", is it possible to
# set the transaction log. ( e.g. to unbuffered logging), without
# going through the "tbmonitor" menu. ( May be through esql/c).
#
# Any pointers/suggestions appreciated.

I can't remember the 4.1 OnLine syntax but in 5.0 you can with the "-l" flag.
*HOWEVER* be aware of the following:
creating the db with logging from the beginning could be a big mistake.
The engine will begin a transaction from the beginning of the load and
will begin to fill the logical logs with the changes from the
transaction. The transaction will not be committed until the dbimport
is completed and as a result the logs wont be released even though they
have been archived off through a tbtape -c command. So you better have
PLENTY of logs for the load.
It doesn't really make alot of sense (IMHO) to load with logs enabled for the
load anyway. You're going to want to do a level-0 archive as soon as you're
done with the load anyway so just do the following:
do your dbimport without the "-l" flag to get your database in. (BTW,
on the file you'll use for the import, created by the dbexport
utility, you can-and should-move the "***load table***" marker
from below any index statements for a table to just above the index
statements for that table. It's faster to load a table then create
the indexes than to load an indexed table)
go into the tbmonitor
take the engine to quiescent mode
change the archive tape device to /dev/null
run a level-0 archive -- with /dev/null device it's done in about 10
seconds
change the archive tape to what ever you need it to be
change the logging on the database
put the engine back online if needed
run another level-0 archive. This will give you the image of the
engine and db you want.
