Update Statistics and performance

I am running Online 5.08 on HP9000/UX 10.20. The problem is every time I run Update statistics (which the manual recommends I should do) performance goes down !. After running update statistics the optimizer does not select the most efficient index, even on simple queries !,) resulting in 2 second queries taking as much 20 minutes (if you care to wait) !. I noticed, that when I recreate the indexes the query costs go down and performance goes up. This is clearly a bug !. Is every one running update statistics out there and has any one come accross this ?.
