Paul Baker asked for lessons from upgrading IDS 7.31 to 11.10. Keith Simmons advised reading the Migration Guide, testing repeatedly, building a new onconfig from the v11 template, completing all in-place alters, archiving, and running update statistics exactly as documented. Reinhard Habichtsberg asked if outstanding in-place alters on huge tables are really a problem; Keith said the guide is explicit and the upgrade may fail.

We are about to upgrade our IDS v7.31 to IDS v11.10. For those who have done
this upgrade, can you please post some lessons learned? Where there any
unexpected road blocks, upgrade / performance problems. Anything at all...
Thank you

READ the Migration Guide.
1. TEST !!
2. Test again
3. More testing.
4. Don't try to convert your existing on-config, transfer your
settings into a new onconfig starting with the v11 template.
5. Ensure all in-place alters are removed/completed.
6. ARCHIVE
7. UPDATE STATISTICS after the upgrade EXACTLY AS PER MIGRATION GUIDE.

Is it really required to "Ensure all in-place alters are removed/completed."
with 9.40FC9 to 11.50 ? For very big tables that might be nearly impossible.
What strategy appears correct?
Any comments are appreciated.
Reinhard.

The Migration Guide is very specific about there being no in-place
alters outstanding. I believe the upgrade is very fussy as well, to
the extent that the upgrade will fail if it detects more than a single
version of any table.
I would consider it not worth the risk and would suggest a way must be
found even for the largest of tables. However it's your data/livlihood
!!
