Good day.
I've tried to run IDS 7.31 on Linux without succes. I am not a big
spec in Unixes, so I need help. Please point me a correct direction.
Some details below.
uname -a:
Linux persey.dati.lv 2.4.21-4.ELsmp #1 SMP Fri Oct 3 17:32:58 EDT
2003 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
oninit -v:Checking group membership to determine server run modesucceeded
Reading configuration file '/opt/informix/etc/onconfig'...succeeded
Creating /INFORMIXTMP/.infxdirs ... FAILED
Creating infos
file "/opt/informix/etc/.infos.ol_persey" ... "/opt/informix/etc/.con
f.ol_persey" ... succeeded
Writing to infos file ... succeeded
Checking config parameters...succeeded
Allocating and attaching to shared memory...FAILED
oninit: Fatal error in shared memory creation
IDS 7.31.UD8 online.log:
16:43:00 shmget: [EEXIST][17]: key 52564801: shared memory already
exists
16:43:00 mt_shm_init: can't create resident segment
I have tried to change SHMBASE to 0x10000000L as in "MACHINE
SPECIFIC NOTES" and also to 0x44000000L as in onconfig.std, but
result is the same.

ON the face of it, you already have an IDS server running. You need to
configure this one with a different server number in the ONCONFIG file.
Server numbers (up to 256 of them) must be unique on a machine -
across all $INFORMIXDIR locations. That is, if you have multiple
versions of IDS around, you can still only use up to 256 instances of
IDS, and then only if you (a) have lots of resources and (b) are
extremely careful.
The other possibility is that the version 7.31 you are trying to run is
for an older Linux distribution than the one you're using.

If these are large, try starting the engine with these parameters set low, say 2000 and 16384 respectively. You may already have IDS running or a previous failure to initialise has left segments in memory (check by running "ipcs" - if you have lots of segments this is probably the case, the easiest way to fix is to reboot). I also notice that you're running a 64-bit OS and this may mean that the SHMBASE value recommended in the release notes will not work. Ben.
