All Informix users must be listed in /etc/passwd, however, their user ids do not have to be loginable (ie no passwd). Permissions on the database can be granted either to public, to a role of which the user is a member, or to the users individually. Informix does not require a login-like connection session as Oracle does although this is supported using hte ESQL CONNECT syntax (RTM). Art S. Kagel
