Care and feeding of OnLine
Posted in 1995
Hello all, I've received an odd request from one of my customers today. They have several OnLine projects moving into production but none has a DBA. The projects are all client/server staffed by many client folks but no server people. What they've asked for is a list of actions they need to take (weekly or monthly) to keep their databases and servers happy. Now, on my own, I can come up with a fair sized list. But, I doubt that I've come across every problem out there. So, what would you place on the list? No doubt every one reading this has had his/her own nightmare that could have been easily prevented. So let's hear them! Here are the details of my particular customer. OS: SCO Unix version 3.2.4.2 DB: Informix OnLine 7.10.UC1 Clients: A mix of PowerBuilder 3.x and 4.0 applications. Each server is setup differently. One has a RAID disk which the customer feels negates the need for continuous logging (don't ask). Another will be using regular disks with one tape drive devoted to continuous logging and another for archiving (it's nice to have money). I haven't seen the third yet but I suspect the worst (backups? why do we need backups?). Thanks for your suggestions! --Craig (craig@chemistry.utah.edu)
