Another one bites the dust: Oracle buys Sleepycat open-source database vendor
Posted in 2006
Not a technical support thread: it's a news/opinion discussion sparked by a link to a Computerworld story about Oracle acquiring Sleepycat Software (Berkeley DB). Posters debated whether IBM needed a response, noting it already has Cloudscape and suggesting Informix could be open-sourced, and argued over Sleepycat's large embedded/DBM installed base and the risk of Oracle buying other open-source players like Zend (PHP) or JBoss. The exchange quickly degenerated into off-topic banter about the Steelers and a webcomic link. No technical problem is posed and no resolution is recorded.

No problem at all: IBM has already an open source embedded dbms: cloudscape If this is not enough: open source the other "embedded" dbms: informix

If you have ever used DBM files on a system, this is the company that maintains that code base, and what Oracle purchased. DBM files don't require "an engine", they just exist and are available, basically one step away from using flat files. Very convenient for password files. +250 million installs is not chump change. So, one down, 2 to go. More troubling than Sleepycat, however, is if Oracle buys Zend. This is a crucial company in the open source spectrum, as the Zend engine is used in PHP. It would be good that they stay independent, but economics seems to be more important. PHP is in a lot of ways the 4GL of the future, all the benefits of easy coding with the basic constructs of C and Perl, and no compile or make, just code and go. Oracle would effectively get a piece of PHP forever, and that is a brilliant move. Go after all the pieces of software with the widest possible installed base and buy them now while the opportunity is hot, and the market is growing. JBoss is on the way up, but not near as important as Zend and Sleepycat.

So, what about those Steelers? -- Bye now, Obnoxio "Jesus you fucking people are hopeless." -- Double Anal "C'est pas parce qu'on n'a rien ' dire qu'il faut fermer sa gueule" - Coluche did i mention i like nulls? heck, i even go so far as to say that all columns in a table except the primary key could/should be nullable. this has certain advantages, for example, if you need to insert a child record and you don't have a parent row for it, just do an insert into the parent table with the primary key value (everything else null), and voila, relational integrity is preserved. but this is, admittedly, a bit controversial among modellers. --r937, dbforums.com

I must however admit that the IGN board metioned in the strip is in no way realted to the IIUG board. :) Jean Georges Perrin (aka jgp) IIUG (International Informix Users Group) - Board of Directors http://www.iiug.org jgp@iiug.org -- GO FURTHER... with DB2 and Informix.
