Upgrade 7.31, FC6 to FD1
Posted in 2009
A user running Informix 7.31.FC6 (500GB, 100,000 tables) under BaaN needed to move to 7.31.FD1, since a BaaN porting-set upgrade required that minimum level, and asked where to get release notes, how long it would take, and whether it could be done without a support contract. Replies explained that while the 7.31 licence is perpetual and any 7.31 release may be deployed, IBM will not supply the FD1 software without active maintenance, and 7.31 is out of support so maintenance can't be reinstated. Art Kagel advised relicensing and upgrading to the then-current 11.50FC5, noting the licence was never actually free (its cost was bundled into BaaN). No way to obtain FD1 was found.

I need to upgrade from 7.31.FC6 to 7.31.FD1. Where can I find the release notes for 7.31.FD1? Does it take long? (database size is 500GB, 100.000 tables) Can it be done free of charge? (no I don't have a support contract)

(no I don't have a support contract) As Keith Simmoms says: - You own a perpetual licence for IDS 7.31 (assuming you did originally acquire it legitimately). - You can therefore legitimately deploy any 7.31 version you wish. - However, as you do not have a valid support contract you will not be able to get the 7.31FD1 software from IBM. IDS 7.31 is out of support now, so you do not even have the option of reinstating maintenance or buying new licences for IDS 7.31.

We did get it free with BaaN and had for years a support contract. Since Informix 7.31 is solid as a rock and their was no need to upgrade (till now), we stopped the contract a few years ago.
IB that Baan supports the current release which is 11.50FC5. You should upgrade to that and get fully re-licensed and supported. Art Art S. Welllll, you didn't get it free at all. Baan simply folded the license costs into your Baan purchase. Informix (or IBM) did get paid for your original license. It really is time to relicense. IDS 11.50 is significantly faster than 7.31 and has many excellent features that you are not taking advantage of currently. Art S.
