Seriously though, you have just hit on the very reason why RAID architectures are (more often than not) bad news for OnLine - OnLine likes to see as many separate raw disks as possible, whereas RAID precludes this. If you are really unlucky you might get mass physical fragmentation too. I've posted this conf several times asking if anyone can come up with some sound reasons why RAID could ever be a *good* idea for OnLine, and to date there have been The Big Zip responses.
