In theory, you don't need two installations (same binaries). But, for administrative purposes, it is a good idea to have two separate installations so that if you want to do some maintenance (like patch ...) on one instance, you need not shutdown the other instance. You need a complete new installation into a different directory, only if you are planning creating your new instance with a different version of Informix other than the one already on the box. If you need to know how to create a new instance with the same version of Informix on the existing box then just follow the same procedure you followed before. Only difference is that you must create a new .profile for the new instance and execute the new .profile whenever you need to get into the new instance. For the new instace you must have its own onconfig, sqlhosts and the env (.profile) files accurately set up. If you are new to Informix and trying to do this in production then GOD BLESS U ! If you have a dev/test environment then get some Informix books and practice setting up two instances using the same version of Informix. And then when you get errors come down to this site and post your errors. Hope this helps. Depends... will you be creating a second instance of the same IDS version as the first instance? or will you have IDS 7.x and IDS 9.x (2 diff versions) on the same box? Two diff versions would need different binary directories i imagine.... but if you'll have the same version..... please do not give up on IBM/Informix support... drill them and get past the "front lines" ... maybe you got a newbie? check the manuals yourself. go to http://www-306.ibm.com/software/data/informix/pubs/library/ select your database (i.e Informix Dynamic Server V9.x) then select your language, then find your manual. for example, the IBM Informix Dynamic Server Administration Guide , Version 9.4. This manual, on page 3-62, explains "accessing multiple database servers" (2 database servers on one host) at a high level. depends on what you are trying to do: if you just want another instance,
just set up the disks, create a new onconfig, modify sqlhosts and you should
be able to get it up. However, if you are going to do things like onbar, you
probably want to install in a separate directory.

Hello, It is absolutely not true that you have to install another instance of the binaries. How it could be doen is discussed ion previuous answers on your request. I find it always very helpfull to do some extra stuff, like: Create a symbolic link for every instance/environment to the informix dir. For example ix_sales and ix_finance that both point to the existing informixdir (like /opt/informix/IDS9.40.UC3). In all your scripts you can point to ths link. If you want to upgrade/patch 1 of your instances, jsut install it in a new directory like IDS9.40.UC4) and copy the sqlhosts and ONCONFIG from your old informix dir (the link or real dir.). Aftyer taht stop the instance, move the link to the new directory and start the engine.
