migrating from 7.x/9.x to IDS 10....any risks ?

We have a got dozens of applications running on Informix Ver 7.x & 9.x on Solaris for several years successfully. Now we are planning to upgrade all these installations to Ver 10. What are the key things that we have to keep in mind from development perspective (code perspective) in order to successfully perform this task ? I know few things like (1) We could have issues with new reserved words (that got added in various releases) (2) The limit on # of varchar columns in a tables has been reduced (3) DBAs have to revisit all the config params and tune them properly after the upgrade. Any other big things / obvious things that we have to worry about ? I am more interested in knowing the risks that we are taking (rather than benefits we might get) by disturbing the stable systems with this upgrade plan. Any expericens ?? Thanks in advance - Murty

Besides this the few issues I can recall: - Sometimes IDS 7 and 10 can behave differently when you issue queries where your parameters don't match the column datatypes... e.g.: when you compare a char column with an integer parameter... I've seen situations where older versions converted the integer to char (which always works) before comparison and newer versions try to convert the char to integer which may fail - Older versions were permissive to calling stored procedures with less parameters than the ones defined in the SP signature. Newer version will consider it a different SP... - If you have distributed queries there may be issues if you mix v7 and v10 engines when v10 tables include extended datatypes (and some catalog tables do have them) Experiences... I've been migrating v7 to v10 in a reasonable large customer with considerable success. Until now they've just hit one bug (which is solved in newer versions and doesn't cause to many troubles). I've hit the 3rd issue above with some 4GL applications (the specific issue is solved in i4GL 7.32), but it's a temporary issue. It will be solved as soon as everything is in v10. Migrations are fairly quick an painless as we all know... In other words, I'd love to see v7 go away ;) Regards. -- Fernando Nunes Portugal http://informix-technology.blogspot.com My email works... but I don't check it frequently...

And don't forget to recompile your SPL code with UPDATE STATISTICS FOR
PROCEDURE/FUNCTION.... afterwards.
