re: back up utility needed

What about Alexandria?
Why?
HP uses it in their complex back up situations - over their own omni
back.
It is used by the who's who of computer indutry for back up.
It is simply the fastest and the best.
OK no more hype - substance.
for 5.x alex uses tbtape for 6 and 7 alex uses ontape
The advantages are:
fine Granularity of data base locking: it does't requrie you to to
bring an entire tablespace to a quiesent state during back up - this in
turn minimizes database performance degregation during back up.
I/O performance: the RPF can interleave data from multiple streams to
optimize throughtput.
Reduced CPU Requirements: the shared memorey config does not load the
CPU as much as higher level utilities ( alex 5 - 10 % CPU Overhead,
openvision and legato - 40 - 50 % cpu overhead, also much less hard
disck space needed and alex is faster than either legato or openvision
- omni back - forget it - this product isn't even used by its own co.
in complex back up situations.
Versatility: works with databases which reside on raw partitions ( raw)
or on UNIX file sytem ( Cooked )
Rapiid recovery in the event of catastrophic failure. - Due to data
cluster technology
Hourly back up of Roll files with OPtional Deletion.
Data integrety: tbtape and ontape is supplied and fully supported by
informix.
