dbimport and tbload on RS6000

I am having problems importing a few large tables (3 X 200 rows). I have tried dbimport and tbload and neither will work. I am running out of disk space.The tables came out of a database that was 300 meg in size. I am importing them into a database that is 500 meg in size and is empty. Informix told me I needed more contiguous space so I created a new volume group with a physical partition size of 256 Meg (as opposed to the default of 4 Meg). It still doesn't work. By using tbstat -d it seems the dbspace is filling up very fast. I have plenty of space in my /tmp filesystem. Has anyone else come across this problem.
