Jack asked how Informix triggers automatic logical log backups and where the NetBackup policy for them comes from. Art explained that ALARMPROGRAM (log_full.sh) runs on engine events — event 23 = log full/complete — and that the shipped script must be edited (enable the backup variables, and adapt it if using ontape rather than onbar). Paul advised setting INFXBSA_POLICY/INFXBSA_LOGICAL_POLICY inside log_full.sh to override bp.conf so logs go to a separate policy, testing with onmode -l and onmode -c. Jack confirmed this eventually worked.

Hi All,
Can someone explain how the automatic logical backup is working? As far as i
know, there's a ALARMPROGRAM variable and the value is
"$INFORMIXDIR/etc/log_full.sh. Once the threshold is reached, it will
automatically kick the logical backup.
1. Where does informix get the policy to backup the logical logs?

You will need to set this export INFXBSA_LOGICAL_POLICY=? somewhere

The alarmprogram script is executed whenever any 'event' happens. Logical
log completed is event # 23. If the onconfig is set up to trap all events,
and the script is set up properly (there are variables in the default script
that need to be changed to enable the backup - also the default script is
set up to use onbar to back up the logs, if you are using ontape you have to
modify the script further). Once set up every time a log fills up and the
engine switches to the next log, the script backs it up.

Thank you...
I've done some research and i'm planning to put in log_full.sh since it is the
value set in ALARMPROGRAM. I will add INFXBSA_POLICY=POLICY_NAME_LOG so that
it will be picked up on Netbackup side. POLICY_NAME_LOG is the policy name in
Netbackup also.
Hope this will work.
Thanks again guys.
Hi,
I did try to add the variables inside the log_full.sh and alarmprogram.sh but
didn't work. I want to bypass the bp.conf (as it is using another
INFXBSA_POLICY to backup the db). I want to backup the logical logs into a
separate policy. Any idea where to put the
INFXBSA_POLICY=netbackup_policy_logs?
thanks,

Adding INFXBSA_POLICY=netbackup_policy_logs into log_full.sh should do it.
Do a "onmode -l" & "onmode -c" it should trigger the log backup via
log_full.sh.
