You absolutely can do this. just run update statistics immediately on bringing up the 7.x instance. That will drop and recreate the indexes and create the SMI database. You should have a full archive before doing this and a dbexport wouldn't hurt. This is my standard method for a 5.x to 7.x conversion Michael Strother Informix
