I don't think that 20000 buffers is too large. However, you might want to
check out the amount of virtural memory that you are actually using.
It might be that you are causing swapping and/or paging because you are
resident and are only really using a small percentage of your virtural
memory.
Are the client programs on this system as well? Or, is the system used
mainly as a stand alone server?
Check your vmstats to see what's going on outside of the engine.
