Logical log backups
Posted in 2006
A user on IDS 7.31/Solaris backing up logical logs and archives via ON-Bar to a flaky autochanger tape device asked how to back logs up to disk instead, then move them to tape later. One reply suggested changing LTAPEDEV, but that was corrected: with ON-Bar the destination is controlled by the storage manager's pool (ISM_LOG_POOL for ISM), not LTAPEDEV. For Legato Networker, respondents advised configuring a disk device/volume pool on the NSR server and setting client env vars (NSR_SERVER, NSR_CLIENT, NSR_GROUP, NSR_SAVESET_NAME, NSR_DATA_VOLUME_POOL, NSR_LOG_VOLUME_POOL) plus correct BSA_LIBPATH/sm_versions, so switching tape vs disk is just a pool change. No confirmation from the poster is recorded.

Hi
I am having a dreadful time with a autochanger tape device for which my
logical logs and archives are backed up to. Problem being the device
frequently stops working and unless it is fixed before the logical logs run
out, I get downtime.
I am using the networker software to back up the logs via onbar.
Question is really, how can I go about backing up my logs to disk for which I
can archive to tape at my leisure. I am sure this can be done, just not sure
how I configure it.
I am running IDS 7.31 on Solaris 2.6.
Any suggestions welcomed.
Thanks
Hi,
Change your "LTAPEDEV" in onconfig file ($INFORMIXDIR/etc/) to the directory
on hard disk.

Hi,
since Steve is using onbar to backup his logs, such a
change of LTAPEDEV in the onconfig file will have very
little effect on the log backup itself.
What needs to be done is to either reconfigure the existing
pool for log backup in the storage manager (SM) or to configure
a new one and use it for log backup.
The corresponding parameter in the onconfig is ISM_LOG_POOL
(at least when using ISM that may need to be changed to make
use of a new/different pool).
The pool in the SM of course needs to be configured in a way that
it will use disk space rather than directly write to a tape device.
I can't tell you how to do this with Legato Networker ... you have
to see in their documentation.

Martin

Thanks for this, the ISM_LOG_POOL is the default in the onconfig file
which would suggest it is not being used, Are their variables I shoule
be looking at other than NSR_SERVER and NSR_CLIENT which a networker
specific.

Hi,
the pool thing is a common concept with storage managers.
If ISM_LOG_POOL fromonconfig file is not used, then you have to find
out (probably at SM end), where the SM puts the log backup objects,
i.e. in which pool. That will then also tell you what you have to change
so that the backup goes to disk rather than tape device ...
I'm not aware of environment variables on the onbar side that would
determine the pool. This is something with Veritas Netbackup (I think),
but Legato Networker has a better concept as far as I remember.

Martin

Steve,
the needed user env vars at the NSR client (the actual db host) might be
e.g. taken from a test box
NSR_SERVER=<hostname of the NSR server>
NSR_GROUP=INFORMIX
NSR_CLIENT=<hostname of the db host>
NSR_SAVESET_NAME=INFORMIX:/<$INFORMIXSERVER resolved>
NSR_DATA_VOLUME_POOL=NSRINFDATA
NSR_LOG_VOLUME_POOL=NSRINFLOGS
The last two mentioned might be the two env vars which are similiar to ISM
related onconfig settings as already mentioned by Martin.
Of course, the correct libary should be mentioned as BSA_LIBPATH in
onconfig and the sm_versions file content in $INFORMIXDIR/etc should be set
correctly.
The related NSR devices, either tape or disk needs actually configured at
the NSR server side.
The also needed labeling will assign the related device to the volume
group, very similiar to ISM.
Eg.
tapedev NSRINFDATA, NSRINFLOGS
diskdev NSRINFDISKDATA NSRINFDISKLOGS
Such a NSR device config allows to toggle between tape and disk just by
changing the related *VOLUME_POOL env vars at the NSR client side.
