Re: ontape -l tape number always 1? (IDS9.40UC6 on Solaris)
Posted in 2005
Hi,
this is nothing to worry about.
I'm not sure when/where this was changed,
but this tape number actually is only the number
of tape within a single (log) backup sequence.
Admittedly, it is unlikely in a real environment, but
to demonstrate this, I configured my log files to
be bigger (a single log file) than LTAPESIZE.
With that I get (for a backup of the current logical
log that is partially full):
% ontape -a
Performing automatic backup of logical logs.
Please mount tape 1 on /work/martinfu/731/ltapedev and press Return to
continue
...
Do you want to back up the current logical log? (y/n) y
Tape is full ...
Please label this tape as number 1 in the log tape sequence.
This tape contains the following logical logs:
2 (partial)
Please mount tape 2 on /work/martinfu/731/ltapedev and press Return to
continue
...
Tape is full ...
Please label this tape as number 2 in the log tape sequence.
This tape contains the following logical logs:
2 (partial)
Please mount tape 3 on /work/martinfu/731/ltapedev and press Return to
continue
...
Tape is full ...
Please label this tape as number 3 in the log tape sequence.
This tape contains the following logical logs:
2 (partial)
Please mount tape 4 on /work/martinfu/731/ltapedev and press Return to
continue
...
Please label this tape as number 4 in the log tape sequence.
This tape contains the following logical logs:
2
Program over.
%
Now, when restoring this log file, I get the following:
% ontape -r
...
Restore a level 1 archive (y/n) n
Do you want to restore log tapes? (y/n)y
Roll forward should start with log number 2
Please mount tape 1 on /work/martinfu/731/ltapedev and press Return to
continue
...
Please mount tape 2 on /work/martinfu/731/ltapedev and press Return to
continue
...
Please mount tape 3 on /work/martinfu/731/ltapedev and press Return to
continue
...
Please mount tape 4 on /work/martinfu/731/ltapedev and press Return to
continue
...
Do you want to restore another log tape? (y/n)n
Program over.
%
If I would have more logs backed up (by a different execution
of "ontape -a"), then I would have said 'y' instead of 'n' (before the
"Program over"). It would then have requested me to "mount tape 1"
of that new log backup sequence ...
I hope that this makes sense to you.
Regards,
Martin
