The message needs to be crisp, and to the point, not pointed at executive management, but pointed to a technical audience, with technical terms, and lots of jargon, and compete with other products it is similar to. Technical people can help management "get it", and this way the money spent on the ad is not wasted on trying to reach people that wouldn't understand it no matter what was in the ad. It also needs to have balls, blasting the products it competes with, rather than that obsequious nice-guy crap that helped Informix go out of business the last time. Before putting the creative together, tear out a few ads from the competition and use those as examples. Next, when you roll out the next release, don't depend solely on the IIUG to promote it. This way it doesn't look like it's just placating to the faithful. When you roll it out, show developers how it integrates into their Windows world, and how it interoperates ( an IBM favorite word ) with other systems, and even how fast it will run on Power5, and how important it is, with a sense of urgency. Put some kind of special offer in the mix to generate some momentum. Make the next release "new and improved" and if you have to, stuff a VW Bug full of skinny women in bikinis and have them drive around town with a web URL pasted on the side of the car. REALLY promote the goddam release this time instead of the whimpy failures of the past.
