Databases just won't respond :(

I have a strange error that I just cannot figure out. I have set up
Informix-SE (downloaded from informix) on my Redhat 5.2 box. I have
followed the instructions in the FAQs and Informix manuals to the best
of my ability. Everything installed happily. I logged in with another
user, and ran dbaccessdemo7 in a test directory. It ran, but it gives
"The specified service name or protocol is unknown." errors in several
places. At one point, it says:
Error in line 1Near character position 1
It then says the creation of the databases is done, and asks if I want
to copy the examples.
When I enter "dbaccess", it loads up and runs fine. When I try to do a
query, or select a database, it shows the 2 entries I have in my
sqlhosts file. One, for the local SE version, and one for the copy of
Online I have running on a Sun machine (which is working fine, someone
else set that one up^_^). When I hit enter to select either of the
databases, it says "The specified service name or protocol is unknown."
again.
The closest error I can find to that in the Informix Errors list, is
25507, which says that it is probably something to do with the sqlhosts
file, and/or it's relationship with the /etc/services file. My sqlhosts
file is:
honey_se setlitcp honeybrown.scicom.com sqlexec
tuppers_tps ontlitcp tuppers tuppers_tli
My /etc/services has:
tuppers_tli 1982/tcp # Matches tuppers port
sqlexec 1983/tcp # I just made this one up
I've tried everything I saw in any FAQ or manual to no avail. If anyone
has any suggestions as to what my problem could be, and/or possible
solutions, I would be most appreciative.

Did you try the release notes? Unless my memory is failing, the
supported protocol is sesoctcp, not setlitcp. And seipcpip, of
course, not that this one is mentioned in the release notes.

Your sqlhosts and /etc/services entries look fine. My guess is that your
linux machine is not using tli(transaction layer interface). Check with your
sysadmin and verify that tli is available. If you are indeed using sockets
rather than tli, just change "setlitcp" to "sesoctcp" in your sqlhosts file.
It looks like your SUN machine may be using tli (since it is apparently
working). If you want to interconnect you may have to either get tli running
on your linux box or begin using sockets on your SUN.
Good luck.

I think you were right about the 'soc' instead of 'tli', my undying thanks. I
don't get the protocol error anymore, however, now whenever I try to do
something, it locks up for about 30 seconds, and gives me:
908: Attempt to connect to database server (honey_se) failed.
ISAM error: record is locked.
I tried this as a user, and as root to no avail. Hehe, all this trouble, just
to get Informix set up enough for me to be able to compile the DBD Informix
module into my perl and have it be able to talk to the Online server on my Sun
machine :) Again, any help or ideas are most welcome.
