Some LVMs require that the first part of any raw device be reserved for
system control information. The original LVM that was developed by IBM
was one of these. When HP developed their LVM, they placed the control
information outside of the actual volumn (raw device). This means that
the offset is not required on HP. Both of the answers are correct. HP
does not require the offset, but some
systems do.
