IDS connectivity with Client running INFORMIX STAR
Posted in 2009
Poster wanted an old INFORMIX-NET/STAR 5.01 client on SCO Unix to connect to IDS 11.0 on RHEL 5. Art Kagel pointed to the client's $INFORMIXDIR/etc/sqlhosts (entries like "servername oltcp hostname port/service"), noting the hostname and service must resolve and sqlexecd must be bounced; Pedro Ivo suggested checking firewall/telnet and the differing default ports (9088 on Linux vs. 1540/star on SCO). Resolved: the poster matched the port (545) in /etc/services on both machines and fixed the trust/authentication issue by adding a .netrc file with server credentials, after which connections worked.

We have our server running the database in Informix Server (IDS 11.0). This machine is having the RHEL 5.0 OS We have a machine having INFORMIX STAR or INFORMIX NET (5.0) client. This machine is having the SCO Unix OS Is there any possible ways to connect INFORMIX STAR with IDS Whenever we try to connect or execute sql calls from the INFORMIX STAR or INFORMIX NET client, it fails to connect the database on IDS 11.0 Server. Is that possible with some configuration tweakings in Informix IDS 11.0. Is there any files in client side to be configured for connectivity?
What version of Online 5.xx do you have? I know that the SQLI protocol that Informix uses was changed between 5.05 and 5.06 or 5.07 'cause the change caused a major performance problem for our apps at BB 14 or 15 years ago. Versions after that should be compatible. What are the relevant sqlhosts file entries from both machines? Informix NET Version is 5.01 - UD3 We could nt find any file like sqlhosts in 5.01 version. Can we install some other informix utilities on top of 5.01, so that we can establish connection between IDS 11.0 and Informix 5.01
Even in IDS 5.01, if you are truly running Informix STAR (the server remote network connectivity portion of OL5.xx) or Informix NET (the client side remote network connectivity module for older OL5.xx clients) there was always an sqlhosts file. It should be in $INFORMIXDIR/etc name 'sqlhosts' and it should have a line for each remote server that the local sqlexecd needs to know about. The format is slightly different than the sqlhosts file for IDS but similar. The remote IDS instances should be defined there as: <servername> oltcp <remote hostname> <port or servicename> If you use a service name that service must be defined in /etc/services and the hostname must exist in /etc/hosts or in DNS lookup. Once you have made these changes you will have to bounce the sqlexecd process. Retorical question: Why not just export these databases and port them to a brand spanking new IDS instance on a dirt cheap Linux box? Did you check if it is not a firewall matter? What happens if you execute the following command on a command prompt in a machine different to the RHEL server? #telnet <RHEL 5 server> <Informix tcp port> Are you using default ports or did you replace them? Take note that Informix default tcp ports in RHEL 5 is 9088 (service sqlexec) or 9089 (service sqlexec-ssl) and on SCO UNIX 5.* it is 1540 (service star) Regards, Pedro Ivo -----Original Message----- From: ids-bounces@iiug.org [mailto:ids-bounces@iiug.org] On Behalf Of LAKSHMI DEVI PALANISSAMY Sent: quarta-feira, 4 de Fevereiro de 2009 15:25 To: ids@iiug.org Subject: IDS connectivity with Client running INFORMIX STAR [14729] We have our server running the database in Informix Server (IDS 11.0). Hi Art, Thanks for your response. It worked out!!!!!!!!! I just used the same port in /etc/services on both systems. After that it was from linux side, which was not trusting the machine running the INFORMIX-STAR. So i went ahead and added a new file called /.netrc having the server credentials. And it started working fine!!!!!
Pedro, I observed the port no. in STAR system as 545. So i changed in IDS server too. It was working fine. Thanks a lot!!!!!!!!!!
