Re: 18.2GB Hard Drive

Steven Stubbe <stubbe@madtech.com> offerred: +How to use an 18gb drive. +Use the volume manager to create as many volumes as you wish on your +larger drives. Really if you have many large drives use the volume +manager +to create stripes on those drives, (of 2gb of course), which can then +become +informix "chunks", which can then be assembled as you wisely design into + +"dbspaces"... Potentially questionable advice, if Informix fragmentation is to be used. I much much much prefer to create dbspaces on non-striped devices and fragment my tables. If I do fragment across stripes, and features like raid cacheing is not available, I can wind up thrashing my disks when a big parallel scan winds up hitting the same physical disk with many read requests (Informix makes i/o requests based on the chunk - if 5 chunks have data on the same physical disk because they were build on striped sets, then I could get 5 i/o requests against one of the disks, while the rest remain idle, creating a bottleneck). Striping is GREAT for filesystems, and potentially beneficial when you are not fragmenting your tables (though w/o raid of some level, a single bad disk could cost you your ENTIRE database).
