You shouldn't create separate login's for separate instances. The master login for server maintenance has to be "informix" and nothing else. If you do as you have done it may sometimes work, but a simple thing like having the informix5 entry before the informix entry in /etc/passwd will make it fail. There are other faliure modes as well. Look in the manual. It says the login *must* be informix. It's very easy to create a file that you can source that set's the appropriate environement variables (including the prompt). You could even easily make a small menu at login that asks you for what instance you want to work with. This is at least as secure against the danger of bringing down the wrong instance or other similar issues as a separate login.
