IDS & Workgroup Edition
Posted in 1998
I'm finding it hard to determine what the essential differences in functionality are between plain IDS and the Workgroup Edition. I've gathered the following information from various sources, but I'm not sure if it's all completely true, especially for the latest releases (7.3x): 1. No table fragmentation in WE. 2. No PDQ in WE. 3. Limited replication (no update anywhere) in WE. 4. Only one instance per machine with WE. 5. WE includes the Netscape web server, etc. 6. Only one CPU VP with WE (?). 7. WE is limited to machines with 4 processors or less (?). Is this all correct and is there anything else I'm missing? Items 6 and 7 seem to contradict one another. Why limit the number of processors if only one CPU VP will be running anyway? Does Informix have a web page that details the differences? WE seems to be about 5 times cheaper per user license. The jump in price from WE to plain IDS is so big that one wonders why there isn't a level between the two. For example, if you're using WE and your database needs grow slightly to require an additional CPU VP without needing other features, the cost for ten users goes from $3,000 to $15,000 - kind of dramatic! Thanks for any pointers, ________________________________________________________________ John H. Frantz Power-4gl: Extending Informix-4gl john@rl.is http://www.rl.is/~john/pow4gl.html
