Transaction log grows w/o transactions

I've noticed that the transaction log of our SE 4.1 engine increases when there is apparently no database activity occurring. The timestamp on the transaction log is more current than the timestamps on amy of the .dat or .idx files which comprise the database and I've seen the byte count grow as well.
