Hello all Wanting some advice please We have been told by an IBM representative that running informix on vms is not a problem. Yet on this forum I have read posts saying dont do it as disk IO suffers. So I am looking for advice here please. We are looking at migrating a 200 gig db from informix on HP to windows platform. This is a critical 24 by 7 enterprise replicated system. Has any one migrated a db from unix hp to windows > WE have Smart blobs with about 150 gig in them as well . Has anyone replicated between unix and windows platforms i hear it can be done
This can be done. You can migrate your database from HPUX to a Windows
based Informix server using any of the standard methods you would use to
migrate between any two other platforms:
- Export/Import using dbexport and dbimport (or my replacement utilities
myexport/myimport - which don't run on Windows, but they will work fine
running on the HPUX side).
- Use bi-directional Enterprise Replication to move the data and keep the
old and new systems in sync until sometime after switchover in case you
have to fail back to the HPUX system for any reason (performance,
application incompatibilities, Informix version or platform specific bugs,
etc.)
- Export/Import the data using HPLoader or External Tables (that's what
myexport/myimport uses).
However, the VM verus raw iron debase aside (you apparently know my
position on that), you will get better performance and more stability by
far if you run Informix under Linux on the same hardware rather than
running it under Windows. That's my advice:
- No to VMWare
- No to Windows
- No to RAID5/6/Z
- Yes to raw iron
- Yes to Linux
- Yes to RAID10
