Re: Informix in the press...
Posted in 2006
Starts as celebration of an IBM press release naming Informix, then shifts to a licensing/distribution gripe: why IDS downloads carry a 90-day time bomb while DB2 (Express) can be downloaded and run free in production. Participants trade conflicting accounts: Neil Truby says IBM pulled IIUG's non-expiring IDS downloads for consistency, Serge Rielau notes DB2 trials also count down 90 days, and Christine Normile explains IBM offered IIUG a non-timelimited IDS v10 but it wasn't posted because of IBM's download-registration requirement. Calls for a free IDS Express went unanswered — no resolution is recorded.

I noticed DB2 does not have the 90-day timeout. I want the full download for Informix just like DB2, no timeout, same thing as if I bought it. Do I have the IIUG to thank for the 90-day timeout?

My understanding is the opposite: about a year ago the IIUG and IBM withdrew free downloads for IDS because they *didn't* have the 90-day bomb which is standard for products emenating from IBM. They understandably didn;t want to retro-fit the bomb to old realeases but did include it in later 9.40, and 10 developments and reinstated the trial versions. If you're saying that DB2 has had the bomb removed - that's news to me!
DB2 never had the bomb. IIUG still offers 9.3/9.4 on Linux / Windows. When pressed the explanation was that they didn;t contain the 90-day bomb and was thus not consistent with DB2.

DB2 always had a message pop up every time you started DB2, counting the days down from 90. The version of IDS v10 without the timeout was made available to the IIUG exclusively for IIUG members to download. IBM requires that individuals register when they want to download a product. Stuart Litel has refused to make the non-timelimited code available because of this IBM restriction (even though IBM was willing to provide the hosting service.) It's interesting that you say you have trial code for DB2 that is non- limited. Could you please provide the link where you obtained it? Are you kidding me! http://www.ibm.com/software/data/db2/udb/db2express/ DUH! It's free to download and run in production! This was my complaint at the Tampa conference, why does IBM let you download and run DB2 in production but not IDS! IDS Express needs to be offered as a free download just like DB2 express. You work for IBM? WTF! Christine Normile wrote: > The version of IDS v10 without the timeout was made available to the > IIUG exclusively for IIUG members to download. They can do what they like. For what it's worth I don't understand what user privacy has to do with a timebomb in the software but ok. I seem to recall that the IIUG version also was crippled in the number of connections or some other deliberate crippling. But it really doesn't matter, I want the real deal not some crippled crap. Hell I can get production ready databases for DB2, Sybase, Oracle, MySQL, there's no reason I should be using Informix if it's not the real deal.
