IDS Version Detection.

I'm looking for the best way to do version detection for IDS. I'd like to get the entire version (to the level of 7.31.xD9 for example). Best would be some sort of external check (access of a port). Second best would be through a registry check, then a file version check or text in a file. Any ideas? Thank You Randolph Finder SAINT software engineer.
