RE: Web Applications: Oracle vs. Sybase vs Informix

Mark As a relative newbie in the world of Web enabled apps (I only recently = started creating my own Web Page), my comments may be way off the mark. = If so I apologise and would appreciate being corrected. But I dont think = that your decision about which database to use should be influenced by = whether your warehouse app is web-enabled or not. I am told that = Informix XPS is making major waves in the area of data warehousing so = you may decide to go with that. Or Oracle or Sybase, if thats what you = prefer. Let me elaborate on what I mean (or think I mean). Your warehouse query = would essentially be an HTML screen with forms which the client fills up = on his Web browser and clicks a submit button. This would fire off a CGI = script (I dont know if you can use a Java applet instead, perhaps you = can) with the user's data on your server which will pull out the data = from the database, create a HTML page with the results, and display it = back to the user. Since the queries and the results are kind-of = preformatted this should be no problem. If you are using CGI and Informix, then you can use the DBI:Perl module = for pulling the data out. I grant you this is more of a string and = baling wire approach, but since your queries are standard, the effort is = a one-time deal. Just my $0.02 worth. Please correct me if I am wrong. Also I would be = interested in knowing what these Web plug-ins do for these databases. = They must be doing something major for the kind of prices they are = asking. Of course I would like to choose one of the major = players (Oracle, Sybase, Informix). I am most familiar with Oracle but it seems = to be quite expensive for publishing data on the web. ($45,000 per = processor for unlimited use internet applications). I would appreciate any input on other possible options in the Sybase and Informix worlds. Are the pricing structures for pulling information out = of the database equally high with these databases? Also I am very interested in the comments anyone else might have in = enabling dynamic web applications using any of these databases. The application = that we have written in Oracle is a reporting mechanism that allows = distributors to query their volumes, organizations, and other pertinent and = constantly changing information. We have also written a custom internet-enabled ordering system. Thanks in advance Mark Johnson
