dbaccessdemo on IDS 11.5 on Mac OSX
Posted in 2008
A user running IDS 11.5 on Mac OS X Leopard couldn't run dbaccessdemo (and any dbaccess connection), getting "-908: Attempt to connect to database server (ol_look) failed / Permission denied". His sqlhosts entry read "ol_look onsoctcp * 9088". Respondents pointed at the hostname field: the bare asterisk wasn't working on OS X (possibly due to DHCP/no static entry in /etc/hosts), and an explicit host/IP was needed. Replacing * with localhost fixed it, with the caveat that localhost-only binding blocks connections from other machines. Another poster also noted dbaccessdemo takes database name and -dbspace arguments.

Hi,
I work with IDS 11.5 on Mac OSX Leopard, the database server work fine with my
application, server studio, ... I have need to install the demo database so I
try to use dbaccessdemo but it doesn't work.
I have this message :
dbaccessdemo
DBACCESS Demonstration Database Installation Script
Dropping existing stores_demo database ....
Creating stores_demo database ....
908: Attempt to connect to database server (ol_look) failed.
Permission denied
Error in line 1Near character position 1
I don't understand why so if someone can help me.
Thanx
Loïc
Hi,
Could you give me a few details?
-908 is a very generic error message, but it is usually has to do with
something not right in the sqlhosts file.
Presuming you installed in the default location I need to see
/Applications/IBM/informix/etc/sqlhosts
And I also need to see
env |grep INF
Thanks,
Mark
(BTW I am working with IDS on a Macbook pro using Leopard)

So, the server is not installed in the default directory but in
/opt/IBM/informix
And the sqlhost file is :
#**************************************************************************
#
# Licensed Material - Property Of IBM
#
# "Restricted Materials of IBM"
#
# IBM Informix Dynamic Server
# (c) Copyright IBM Corporation 1996, 2004 All rights reserved.
#
# Title: sqlhosts.demo
# Description:
# Default sqlhosts file for running demos.
#
#**************************************************************************
# IANA (www.iana.org) assigned port number/service names for Informix:
# sqlexec 9088/tcp
# sqlexec-ssl 9089/tcp
demo_on onipcshm on_hostname on_servernamedemo_se seipcpip se_hostname sqlexec
And for my server sqlhosts.ol_look
ol_look onsoctcp * 9088
And the result of command env |grep INF :
INFORMIXDIR=/opt/IBM/informix
INFORMIXSERVER=ol_look
INFORMIXSQLHOSTS=/opt/IBM/informix/etc/sqlhosts.ol_look
When I launch dbaccess all command are finished by the same error :
908: Attempt to connect to database server (ol_look) failed.
But the dbaccess application work.
I hope this informations can explain the problem.
Thanx for your help
Loïc
You can put asterisk (*) in sqlhosts file only on server side.
And you are using dbaccess which is client tool.
So, you have to put your IP address in sqlhosts instead of asterisk.

Hi,
That is what I originally did for my server.
OS X currently doesn't like the * for some reason.
When I changed mine from * to localhost
it worked without a problem.

Actually he is both client and server on Mac OS X.
The * should work, but it seems that * doesn't work by itself, especially if
he is connecting as a DHCP server (which would be my guess).
If he was a static ip in /etc/hosts, then my guess is a * would work.

Yes, your environment is not set up correctly. I have been using IDS
11.5 on the Mac for several months now without any problems as far as
dbaccessdemo is concerned.
You do know your syntax is not correct though, don't you? It should be
dbaccessdemo database_name_you_want -dbspace
space_to_create_database_in [-log]

Thank you very much. I have replace the * by localhost and all work correctly :) Thanx again Loïc
Hi, if you use localhost (which is 127.0.0.1 or something like that), than you can not connect to that server from other machines. This is just remark, so when you'll want to use some clients, you'll have to "reconfigure" sqlhosts file and bounce engine.
