Telecom Australia Deploys 500 User Informix System Sydney, Australia. 12 May 1995 INFORMIX-NewEra Enables Successful Deployment of Enterprise-Wide Project Management Application Informix Software Pty Ltd, the leading provider of parallel processing database technology, today announced that the Platform Technologies Unit in Telecom Australia has begun deploying its latest second generation client/server application, named Trinity, to 25 users. Platform Technologies plans to extend this deployment of Trinity to up to 500 users throughout the unit to effectively manage the unit's total program of work. This application, built using INFORMIX=AE-OnLine Dynamic Server=81 and INFORMIX-NewEra=81, Informix's second generation client/server application development tool, will enable users to integrate and program manage project management-based information throughout Telecom's Platform Technologies group (PT). "Previously, users of Microsoft's Project project management system were unable to effectively share data with each other to compile an effective business profile of the PT group," said Mr David McVay, Telecom's manager for the Trinity project. "The new system, running on Windows PCs and Sun servers, will significantly improve the productivity of these users by linking their desktop MS Project systems. Actions such as diverting staff from a project ahead of schedule to a project that is behind schedule will now become more simple automated tasks. Additionally, it will give more accurate insight into the business capability for new work and also allow for new skills profiles to be identified for training purposes as we can now forward plan to see what staff need to be trained in what technology areas." The system was developed for Telecom by Informix's Value Added Partner, Telsun Pty Ltd located in Sydney, Australia. The system was completed in under five weeks using nine analyst-programmers. Commenting on this, Mr Bob Loverseed, managing director of Telsun, said that it would have taken four times that length of time using conventional tools. Mr Loverseed described NewEra as "remarkably fast" and that it "scales extremely well". Mr Loverseed indicated that Telsun spent considerable time evaluating alternative products but could not find anything that met their requirements for scalability given the number of users that had to be supported by the production system. He noted that, "applications built two or three years ago with older development products do not scale as efficiently as the applications that they can build today with NewEra." The other main attraction of NewEra for Telsun was its database independence. Telesun anticipate a high level of interest in Trinity from other groups within Telecom as well as from overseas telecommunications companies. These potential new users may not be using Informix's OnLine Dynamic Server. Nevertheless, they will be able to use Trinity via NewEra's ODBC connectivity class library. Another key benefit of NewEra that Telsun found during the development of the Trinity application derived from its ability to support application protyping allowing the programmer to get immediate feedback "You can re-cut the code on the fly without rewriting any of it," Mr Loverseed commented. Reflecting on the success of this application, Mr Steve Dolan, director of marketing of Informix, said, "We are delighted that an area in one of our largest customers in Australia is impressed with our latest application development product. Platform Technologies in Telecom has consistently made effective use of Informix technology." Mr Dolan continued, "Platform Technologies' positive experience with NewEra is also being felt amongst our many Value Added Partners. Many of them are switching to NewEra for the development of their next generation of client/server applications. I am confident that we will see many more successful implementations of NewEra in the near future."
