NewEra 2.0 and Win95 ?
Posted in 1996
Hi again. I re-installed newera 2.11 and looked at the online help: Help file: Release Notes for INFORMIX-NewEra 2.11.WC1 Subject: Tips for Running NewEra 2.11.WC1 on Windows 95 and Windows NT -- copy and paste from help file No Multi-Instance Support on Windows 95 in NewEra 2.11.WC1 The term "multi-instance" refers not only to multiple instances of the same application, but also means that only a single NewEra application can be run at a time, due to the fact that the NewEra DLLs (newvcl.dll, ccl.dll, ascl.dll, and fgl.dll) will be shared between the two applications. Since these DLLs contain global data, these global data would be shared between the separate applications, which could cause indeterminate results. -- end copy Any comment on this ? I remember now also that on windows95, the Microsoft C compiler (version 8.00c - I think it came with Microsoft C++ 1.5) crashes when compiling 4gl files that are created with window painter - it crashes on the last line of the .c file: static void far * NE_INITTAB _FGLinitptr = (void far *)_FGLinitc; At the time, I did take a look at the Microsoft Bugs section and found that there are a series of bug reports on similar crashes of the compiler. As that version of the compiler was not specific to win95 (and the crash only happened on win95), I waited for the upgrade (Microsoft C++ version 1.51 ?) but it also crashes on the same line. The only other irritating "feature" of NewEra programs is the crashing that happens when we open 2/3 programs with several big forms - about 300 / 400 ? objects between all the forms - the programs give an out of resources message. I may sound critic, but I think NewEra is a good implementation of a graphic interface, and has a GREAT compatibility with 4gl code. Right now, we have several programs that run every night on our Unix system and mantain 99.99% compatibility between our Unix code and our NewEra code. With NewEra, and with a team of 2 persons, it was possible to make a port of several hundred thousand (or more?) lines of code to newera in about 3 months. We started the porting programs in July 95 - NewEra 1.0 - made our first demo of the graphic interface in September - Human Resources, Acounting, Stock Control and Immobilized? Control (Buildings, Autos, etc) packages - and sold our first NewEra licence on October. Practicaly all development is done on the Unix system (4gl code) and the porting programs continue to run every night, mantaining the compatibility between both systems. Have to go now.
