Translating with DrWatson… this can take a few seconds the first time.
This is a genuine, complex translation. DrWatson protects commands, error codes, and log output while naturally translating the surrounding text. It’s translated once and saved.
Bart Groot asked how to check whether the Informix engine is online besides onstat -, such as a ping utility or a dummy query on sysmaster. Obnoxio The Clown preferred onstat - because a query might hang. Fernando Nunes said setting INFORMIXCONRETRY and INFORMIXCONTIME avoids that and that onstat - does not work remotely. No single final answer.

Hi All,
I was just wondering; are there any other tools to determine the informix
engine status besides onstat -? I would like to use a script to monitor our
databases. We are using the alarmprogram.sh, but I would like to check if the
database server is up and running. Are there any database ping utilities? Or
should I use a dummy query; e.g. select * from sysusers on sysmaster?
Thanks,
Regards, Bart

I'd stick with onstat -
IIRC, the select from a table could hang for a long time if the engine is
not up.

Not necessarily...
Just set INFORMIXCONRETRY and INFORMIXCONTIME to fair values...
onstat - will not work remotely... (unless you use ssh to connect to the
dbserver of course :) )
Regards.

Are you implying that the default values might not be good enough? :oD

Make it OAT's problem. ;o)
