Informix does not require any login procedure or passwords only that the client is recognized by the server and trusted and that the user is a valid user on the server host. The user does not even need a valid password or home directory (except that any SET EXPLAIN ON commands will try to create/write to the file sqexplain.out in the users's home directory but with no way to login and retrieve the file you can just have a globally writable directory for all users to call 'home' and soft link /dev/null to $HOME/sqexplain.out). Anyway if you are using ODBC (or Informix CLI which amounts to the same thing) ODBC is what is requiring the login and passwd and then the users' must have a valid loginable password on the server. Is there a way around? Sure, use ESQL/C instead of ODBC which implements the Sybase connection protocols which do require a password. Art S. Kagel
