Without seeing your ISAM error it's impossible to say for sure, but it's probably a lock error - you're trying to read a row that somebody else has a lock on. There are several solutions available from an Informix perspective - SET ISOLATION TO DIRTY READ, SET LOCK MODE TO WAIT, etc., but I'm not sure if you can implement them given your application requirements.
