Randy:
I can understand your frustration. Whether I can help you is a different
matter. However, I'll give it a try.
1. REMSQL will never indicate an error.
2. The TCP port number you entered into your PC's c:\\pctcp\\etc\\services
also needs to be in the /etc/services file in your Unix server. If
these numbers are different between the two systems it won't work.
3. You need to make sure that the SQLEXEC daemon is running on your Unix
server. (as root, got to $INFORMIXDIR/lib and run sqlexecd)
4. I suggest you separate your TCP connection diagnosis from your I-NET
diagnosis. Do this by first testing if you can TELNET to your
host from the PC. This is simply accomplished by typing:
tn [your-host-name | xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx]
If this works (you should see a login: prompt), then your PCTCP
install is probably OK. Otherwise give the folks at FTP Software a
call, their tech support is pretty good.
Once you've done all this, chances are you will either access the database
as expected or get a different message at your client. Make sure you
properly entered the right host, username and password when you started
REMSQL.
(For diagnostic purposes, I would put them in DOS variables until
you get it all working, this way you can actually see the values after
the fact. Naturally, this is not recommeded for normal use.)
Unfortunately, Informix does not provide a dumb client to test this all,
so even if this is set properly, you may still have problems with the set-up
of whatever client software you are using. If you need to talk someone,
give us a call.
Good Luck.
