Need Info on DIF files

I need to create a generic DIF text file suitable for loading into a spreadsheet (Excel, specifically). My plan is to use Informix to create a variable length delimited data file and then to use awk to create the .dif file out of the data. No problemo. Unfortunately I don't know the "rules" for the structure of DIF files. Can anyone help me or point me to suitable reference? (please... no suggestions to man dif - that doesn't work!) Yes, I know Excel can import a delimited text file. I need for certain data to be placed in definite cells on the spreadsheet.
