Informix version questions
Posted in 1994
In addition to some general UNIX contracting I do for a client, I maintain a medium-size database system using Informix. They had acquired the product before I was hired on, so I know little of the software beyond the set of four manuals that I have and the version number on startup: INFORMIX-SQL Version 4.00.UH1 This has the screen form generator and processor and the report engine but no 4GL. It's running on a Sun SparcII with SunOS 4.1.3. I've been working with this system for about two years now with nary more than a few irritations, but we're getting ready to make the move to Solaris 2.3 and I don't want to leave things to chance with binary compatibility. My questions: What's the current version? Will there be any problems moving over our current database and forms? What is Informix's upgrade policy, both wrt new versions for SunOS 4 and Solaris 2? As far as I know, all licensing is current. What do we get by moving to a more recent version? Could someone explain the Informix product tree to me? I can understand where the 4GL fits in, but what are Informix Online and SE? Thanks for any and all information. -- Jason L.
